At this point, Amanda imagines her life as an orphan. She believes that being an orphan, she can wander the streets freely. She has the liberty to draw designs in the soft dust with her bare feet without anyone saying anything. She believes that an orphan's life is full of freedom and peace. The poet implies that Amanda is so frustrated with her mother that she thinks the opposite. Her mother was suggesting she clean her shoes to live a healthy and hygienic life, but Amanda interpreted it as her mother taking away her freedom.
